Honey at Home

If you’ve ever been to your local farmers market you’ve probably seen a few booths of local honey vendors in your town. Aside from a delicious treat to be added to tea or desserts, honey has a number of health and beauty benefits too!

Honey is a humectant, it attracts and retains moisture in your hair and skin. Honey is also an emollient, helping to soften and smoothen.

Meaning soother or softener, an emollient softens dry, rough, flakey skin, making it look and feel better. When the top layer of your skin doesn’t contain enough water, it dries out. This causes the skin to crack and flake off, leaving open spaces between the cells in your skin. Emollients fill those spaces with fatty substances, called lipids, which make your skin smoother and softer.

The dry weather is here and my skin has been looking pretty dull lately. I turned to Pinterest and found this highly recommended honey mask I just HAD to try myself.
This mask will drip so make sure you use an old shirt when trying this mask. If you have oily skin this is not the mask for you. This mask is perfect for dry skin and combination skin. I lean towards combination and love how the mask made my skin look and feel once I rinsed my face.  

Honey + Coconut Oil Glowing Face Mask

2 Tbsp Coconut Oil (I melted mine)
2 Tbsp Honey

Directions: In a medium-size bowl mix coconut oil and honey until combined. Once combined smear all over face and let sit for 15-20 minutes (the mask will not dry). Once the mask has set over your face use a soft washcloth and warm water to clean mask off the face. Once face is clean pat dry. No cream is needed after the mask. Your face should look nice and dewy.

Dry, brittle. Can’t deal in humidity. Frizzes out if you brush it. If this is your hair, I have just the thing for you. This anti-frizz yogurt and honey hair mask will be your new favorite!

Most hair treatments recipes are based on oil, but if you have thin hair –  you just end up trying to wash oil out of your hair for days. Right!?

That’s why, ever since I tried this mask – I haven’t turned back.

It deeply conditions your hair and leaves it looking happier and shinier.

Yogurt adds shine to your hair while the honey thickens it. The citric acid present in yogurt effectively fights dandruff.

Deep Conditioning Honey + Yogurt Hair Mask

2 Tbsp natural yogurt
1 Tbsp honey

Directions: In a medium-size bowl combine ingredients together. Work the mask onto your hair, from the scalp to the ends. Give your scalp a good massage – you want the mask to cover your scalp. Leave the mask on for 15 -20 minutes. Wash as normal, but really well! If you use conditioner, just a small amount on the ends will do. Do this treatment once a week to restore and maintain your hair. For longer hair, just double the amounts of ingredients you use.

**Honey contains the enzyme glucose oxidase. When you let it sit on your hair for an extended period of time, the enzyme slowly releases hydrogen peroxide, which naturally lightens the hair. Please use caution when using on color-treated hair!**
